ALKAS is an award established to commemorate the Langkawi Declaration, which was signed by the Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1989 in Langkawi, Malaysia. This declaration represents a commitment to protecting the environment and addressing issues such as pollution and climate change. The award, originally known as the Langkawi Award, was introduced in 1991 to demonstrate the commitment of the citizens and the Nation toward achieving sustainable development goals as enshrined in the Langkawi Declaration.

ALKAS is the highest honor and recognition bestowed by the Government through the Department of Environment (DOE) to individuals and organizations in Malaysia who have made significant and major contributions toward environmental sustainability.
