THE MSJCE EG (SOJ RELATED ACTIVITIES), 2026
Cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore in environmental management continues to be strengthened through the MSJCE EG (SOJ Related Activities) Meeting platform to enhance the sharing of information, expertise and experience on environmental issues in the Straits of Johor (SOJ).
On 19 May 2026, DOE, Malaysia and NEA, Singapore, conducted a Joint Sampling Exercise in the SOJ. This initiative follows the finalisation of the Guidelines for the Joint Seawater Monitoring Programme for the Straits of Johor in September 2025, aimed at ensuring the consistency and reliability of water quality monitoring data in the SOJ.
Subsequently, the MSJCE EG Meeting on 20 May 2026 was co-chaired by Mr. Rosli bin Zul, Director of the Enforcement Division, assuming the duties of Deputy Director General (Operation), DOE, Malaysia and Ms. Tan Li Yen, Group Director, Clean Environment Group, NEA, Singapore.
The meeting discussed the implementation of the Joint Sampling Exercise, water quality monitoring in the SOJ, cooperation under the Joint Planning Team (JPT), including the development of an SOP for transboundary oil spill incidents, capacity building between the Malaysian Environmental Institute (EiMAS) and the Singapore Environment Institute (SEI), as well as preparations for the 15th Chemical Spill Exercise 2027. The outcomes of the discussions will be presented at the next MSJCE Working Group Meeting.
This cooperation reflects the continued commitment of Malaysia and Singapore to protecting the waters of the SOJ and strengthening regional environmental management.
