Course on Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC)

Erosion and sedimentation by development projects (agriculture, construction, mining etc) are the biggest source of pollution to rivers in Malaysia especially in urban areas. This does not only result in river aquatic life depletion, but marine ecology is also affected as large sediment loads continue to spread along the coastline which smothered out spawning grounds and coastal sea-beds. Inland, sediment chokes up culverts and river-beds, increasing flash floods frequencies. Thus, competent professionals are needed to design and review Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (ESCP) in EIA & EMP reports and supervise implementation of Best Management Practices on-site. With limited erosion and sediment control expertise in the country, Malaysia still has a long way to go.

In awareness of this situation, Department of Environment Malaysia through EiMAS in partnership with EnviroCert International, Inc (USA) is organizing a training programme for Certified Professionals in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC). CPESC is recognized specialists who have met established standards of expertise, experience and knowledge in soil erosion and sediment control through a process of peer review and written exams conducted through EnviroCert International, Inc.

EnviroCert International, Inc which is based in USA officially took over CPESC, Inc on the 1 April 2008. Other certification programmes under the corporation include Certified Erosion, Sediment and Storm Water Inspector (CESSWI) and Certified Professional in Storm Water Quality (CPSWQ). Currently, there are over 3000 professionals in Erosion and Sediment Control and Storm Water Quality who have been certified under the corporation from all over the world including
(Australia, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland and Malaysia).
